NICH launches “Belize @45 Magical History Tour” with historian Assad Shoman

By Zoila Palma:  The National Institute of Culture and History (NICH) is inviting Belizeans to explore the country’s history through the “Belize @45 Magical History Tour,” featuring historian Assad Shoman.

The initiative forms part of activities surrounding Belize’s 45th anniversary of independence and aims to encourage deeper reflection and discussion about the nation’s past.

The tour will include engagements with high school students, giving young Belizeans an opportunity to examine the country’s history critically and explore aspects that may not always be covered in traditional textbooks.

Public forums will also be held in the evenings, allowing community members to participate in discussions and ask questions about Belize’s historical development.

NICH said the tour will visit communities across the country, with activities scheduled at the Ignacia Cacho Public Library in Corozal on August 28.

In September, the tour will continue at the San Ignacio-Santa Elena House of Culture on September 3, Benque Viejo House of Culture on September 4, and the George Price Center for Peace and Development on September 7.

Additional sessions are scheduled for the Belize City House of Culture on September 11, Banquitas House of Culture in Orange Walk on September 15, and the Corozal House of Culture on September 16.

The tour encourages participants to reflect on Belize’s journey to independence and consider whether independence fully ended the social, economic and historical influences inherited from the colonial era.

NICH is encouraging Belizeans, particularly students and community members, to participate in the tour and engage in what it describes as an opportunity to ask difficult questions about the country’s history.
