If you’ve ever been to a New York Knicks game at Madison Square Garden there’s one piece of small talk you’ll be practically guaranteed to hear: ‘You know the ice rink is right underneath.’ Conversely, if you’re there watching a bruised twenty-something-year-old New York Rangers player be taken off the ice you’ll hear the opposite: ‘And then they turn it into a basketball court’. When I saw Billy Joel there a few years ago, seated in a crowd of nearly 20,000 during just one evening of his decade-long residency, I did not expect the concert to be such an intimate experience.
