By Zoila Palma: During the PUP’s National Party Council meeting held over the weekend in Dangriga, Prime Minister John Briceno expressed confidence in the PUP winning San Ignacio and Santa Elena in the 2027 municipal election.
“We are going to win San Ignacio and Santa Elena for the People’s United Party,” the Prime Minister said.
But can Aaron Mai unseat 4-term UDP Mayor Earl Trapp?
During the course of his political career, Trapp has faced many contenders but has remained steadfast and won 4 consecutive terms as Mayor of the Twin Towns.
However, it seems that the PUP is oiling its machinery to face Mayor Trapp with a united front in 2027.
As the UDP and PUP gear up for this heated municipal election, we have seen the Mayoral aspirant and councilor candidates visiting residents and gearing up the campaign.
Undoubtedly, the Twin Towns of San Ignacio/Santa Elena which has traditionally been a competitive political battleground will be one to watch closely.
With Mai positioned as the only PUP mayoral aspirant, and Mayor Trapp seeking a consecutive 5th term, the race could become one of the key municipal showdowns in the upcoming election.
