The police on Thursday arrested the mother of the newborn baby boy who was allegedly found abandoned at a church at Omungwelume in the Ohangwena region on Tuesday.

This was confirmed by regional police deputy commissioner Theofelus Willem.

He says the baby is alive and healthy.

“The 36-year-old mother was traced through intelligence observation and officers immediately took her to Engela State Hospital for a medical check-up,” he says.

Willem says the woman, who is a mother of two, later confessed that she was the baby’s mother after being examined at the hospital.

The police interrogated her again and she was arrested for baby dumping, Willem says.

He adds that the suspect was detained at Oshikango Police Station and will make her first appearance in the Oshakati Magistrate’s Court on Monday.
