Repeated drug interceptions at the island’s formal ports of entry have increased scrutiny of post offices and courier services, which police describe as hotspots for drug trafficking.

Assistant Superintendent of Police Shervon Matthieu, who heads the Gangs, Narcotics and Firearms Unit, made the disclosure in response to questions from St Lucia Times about a string of seizures linked to incoming and outgoing packages last year.

“Courier services and post offices are one of the hotspots,” Matthieu said.

His remarks come on the heels of another interception at the General Post Office in Castries last week.

Officers from the Gangs, Narcotics and Firearms Unit were called in after Customs officials identified three suspicious packages containing prohibited items during routine inspections of cargo from the United States.

The contraband, which included cannabis and cannabis resin, had been concealed inside everyday goods.

Police say investigations into the latest seizure are ongoing.
