Here’s all you need to know ahead of September 2026 SASSA Children’s Grants next month. With just over 13-million recipients, South Africa’s child welfare represents the most expensive social-protection programme of any by the state.

Therefore, millions of households with vulnerable children will be awaiting the next payment date – Thursday 3 September 2026.

SEPTEMBER 2026 SASSA CHILDREN’S GRANTS

Encouragingly, this gap represents a normal 28-day cycle and not the 33 days it did this month. As ever, the grant amounts for September 2026 SASSA Children’s Grants themselves are unchanged:

• SASSA Child Support pays R580, up by R20 from R560 back in April 2026.
• SASSA Foster Child pays R1 290, up by R40 from R1 250 back in April 2026.
• SASSA Care Dependency pays R2 400 up by R80 from R2 320 back in April 2026. 

Something else to look forward to is the prospect of the usual mid-year increase in October 2026. Although these exact figures are still to be confirmed by the National Treasury. If you register your child with the Department of Home Affairs from the month of their birth, you can start claiming child welfare immediately. Calculated all the way to their 18th birthday, this is a benefit of roughly R185 000 in taxpayer aid to the parents.    

INCOME ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS

Likewise, applicants shouldn’t forget that the department has revised income eligibility requirements for the South African Social Security Agency. Previously, a single caregiver on Child Support could earn R5 100 per month and still qualify. Now that limit has increased to R5 800. While, for married couples looking after a minor, the figure increases from R10 200 to R11 600 per month.

Tallied up annually, that is R69 600 (single person) and R139 200 (couple). Note that there is no asset portion to the means test, like with SASSA Old-Age Grants. On a positive note, the agency also claims new maximum wait times of 90 minutes at SASSA offices. Thanks to self-service kiosks with Wi-Fi, beneficiaries can complete eLife and biometric verification in double-quick time and for free. The agency also says it is tackling the scourge of criminal syndicates that are extorting vulnerable beneficiaries waiting in SASSA queues.

SAME-DAY SERVICE FOR CHILD SUPPORT

Speaking of queues and waiting, the agency also says September 2026 SASSA Children’s Grants can be approved on the same day. Previously, the waiting period used to be closer to three months. However, if you have all your documents in order on your first visit, you could walk away with an approved grant right there and then. Here’s what you need to bring to your application appointment:

• Valid identity documents (IDs) and birth certificates of you, your child and spouse (if married).
• Proof of marital status (marriage, birth or death certificate of your spouse).
• Proof of income (you and your spouse).
• Certified three-month bank statement, not older than three months.
• Proof of address (a utility statement with your name on it that’s not more the three-months old).

If you don’t produce all the correct documents and copies, you may be sent away and asked to return. And if you are denied a SASSA grant, you have three months to lodge an appeal with the DSD HERE.
