Proudie wins primary to succeed Brian Williams

State Rep. Raychel Proudie won the Democratic primary for Missouri Senate District 14.

Proudie, who has represented House District 73 since 2019, is in line to succeed term-limited state Sen. Brian Williams. Proudie is term-limited in the House.

She secured the Democratic nomination in a four-way race with 38.9% of the vote.Her closest competitor was St. Louis County NAACP President John Bowman, who received 30.8%, followed by Shanté Duncan with 15.8% and Joseph Palm with 14.6%. 

Leading up to the election, Proudie reported that her campaign lawn signs were being systematically stolen across the district.

“Just my signs were targeted,” Proudie wrote in a social media post. “Yard signs don’t vote.”

As a state representative, Proudie, a certified teacher and counselor, has focused on education, criminal justice and family law. Her sponsored legislation includes bills creating a registry for domestic violence offenders, restoring voting rights for people on probation and parole, allowing pregnant individuals to file for divorce or legal separation and expanding hair-discrimination protections through the Missouri CROWN Act. 

Proudie will face Republican Vernon Norman in the November general election. District 14, encompasses communities across North St. Louis County, including Ferguson, Overland, and University City, and is considered a reliable Democratic stronghold.

Attempts to reach Proudie for comment were unsuccessful.
