Malawi Queens expatriate coach Debbie Fuller says she will meet the rarget set by Netball Association of Malawi (NAM) for the national netball team to finish within the top-seven bracket at the 2026 Glasgow Commonwealth Games in Scotland.
She said this as the team left for England enroute to Scotland for the games yesterday through the Bakili Muluzi International Airport in Chileka, Blantyre.
She said: “When going for a pinnacle event like this, the goal is to win and not as tourists. We will give out the best to see how far we can go and that’s what we are going to do.”
“We are going to meet the set targets of finishing within the best seven teams at the competition.”
She said it is exciting to go to the games and make Malawi proud with a new defensive style that has been fused into the Queens’ unorthodox play.
The Queens are going to the games with a 12-player squad, which includes three players that previously represented Malawi at previous major competitions. The experienced players are Australia-based shooter Mwawi Kumwenda, centre Takondwa Lwazi and goal defender Martha Dambo.
Rising stars such as shooter Stella Matelezi, centre Mphatso Banda and wing attacker Ethel Ng’ambi believe they are capable of helping the Queens to improve their standing on the world rankings, where they are ninth.
“We know the responsibility we carry on pur shoulders and we are determined to make the country proud,” said Matelezi.
NAM president Vitumbiko Gubuduza said they believe in the team’s capabilities, taking into account the advanced training techniques they have gone through.
Nico Group head of corporate affairs Mbumba Mlia-Ndasauka said her entity is committed to the Queens’ rebuilding process and they are happy with the progress made so far.
Before the games, the Queens will play two international friendly matches against England men’s team and one against New Zealand.
Meanwhile, Mwawi, the Queens’ most decorated and experienced player, is scheduled to join the squad today tn England.
