Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra were among Opposition MPs detained by the police on Wednesday during the INDIA bloc’s protest at Jantar Mantar in Delhi to demand the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.

This was the third time in less than two days that Rahul Gandhi, the leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, was detained.

Several Opposition MPs had travelled to the protest site after a lunch hosted by Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge.

Moments before the MPs were detained, the police lathi-charged workers of the Indian Youth Congress and members of the National Students’ Union of India, which are affiliated to the Congress.

The police were also trying to remove the other protesting MPs, many of whom were lying down on the road, showed visuals of the demonstration posted online.

“This is how they treat members of Parliament who are asking simply to meet the election commissioner,” Vadra told reporters before she was detained. “Women police personnel have scratched me all over and thrown us to the ground.”

Gandhi said that the Opposition will not stop protesting till Kumar resigns. “This is a fight to protect the most sacred thing in this country,” he said.
