Residents cast hopes on new Kilongawima–Mbezi Beach road to ease Bagamoyo road’s traffic congestion

DAR ES SALAAM: THE newly completed Kilongawima–Mbezi Beach Road is set to ease traffic congestion along the busy Bagamoyo Road corridor and improve connectivity for thousands of residents in Kinondoni District and surrounding areas.

The 1.7-kilometre road, constructed by the Rural and Urban Roads Agency (TARURA) at a cost of more than 4bn/-, has been completed to bitumen standard, providing a reliable alternative route for commuters in Dar es Salaam.

Minister of State in the Prime Minister’s Office (Policy, Parliament, Coordination and Persons with Disabilities), Prof Palamagamba Kabudi, commended TARURA for delivering the project, saying it would significantly improve transport services in the city.

Prof Kabudi made the remarks during an inspection tour of various development projects in Dar es Salaam, where he said the government had made major progress in addressing infrastructure challenges in previously difficult areas.

He said the road would serve as an important link for residents of Mbweni, Ununio and neighbouring areas, while also providing an alternative route for commuters who previously relied heavily on Bagamoyo Road.

“This is a significant improvement in addressing transport challenges and enhancing mobility for residents who depend on this route,” Prof Kabudi said.

Dar es Salaam Regional Commissioner Albert Chalamila also praised TARURA for completing the project, stressing the need to protect pedestrian facilities and ensure they are used for their intended purpose to improve road safety.

Kilongawima Street Chairman Joathan Mkucho said the project had resolved long-standing transport challenges faced by residents and improved movement for many people, including commuters travelling from Bagamoyo to workplaces in Dar es Salaam.

“The project is good and we welcome it. What remains important is ensuring drainage systems are cleaned regularly,” he said.

A resident of Kilongawima, Elizabeth Mwema, thanked the government for completing the project, while calling for the installation of road signs and proper use of pedestrian walkways to enhance safety.

The completion of the road adds to ongoing efforts by the government to expand urban road networks and improve transport efficiency in Dar es Salaam, one of the fastest-growing cities in the country.
