Rise in statutory rape cases puts spotlight on Child Protection Month

The Department of Justice says its latest statistics show an increase in statutory rape cases during the 2025–2026 financial year.

The number of reported cases rose from 127 in the previous year to 199.

The figures also indicate a growing concern involving child offenders, with 22 minors reported for statutory rape and 890 implicated in rape cases.

The data comes as South Africa marks Child Protection Month.

The Teddy Bear Foundation says there is a need for a stronger response to the issue.

Dr Shaheda Omar from the foundation says, “As we look at Child Protection Month for 2026, trying to focus on these key areas, and I think the key areas that we are looking at are, of course, strengthening statutory response and to… adopt a zero-tolerance approach to statutory rape where any sexual acts with a child under 16 is criminalised regardless of consent. If we look at the focus on closing gaps, I think that is something that is also creating awareness in the broader community, where people are more equipped and empowered to recognise.”

Authorities and organisations say increased awareness and stronger legal responses are needed to address the trend.
