Rotary Club revitalizes Maternal and Child Health unit at San Ignacio Hospital

By Zoila Palma:The Rotary Club of San Ignacio has completed a major revitalization project at the Maternal and Child Health Unit of the San Ignacio Community Hospital, marking 28 years of humanitarian service within the community.

The initiative reflects Rotary International’s global commitment to maternal and child health and aims to improve the experience of women and children accessing healthcare services.

Guided by the Rotary motto, “Service Above Self,” club members undertook extensive upgrades to the unit, beginning with the repainting of the waiting room area. The transformation created a brighter, cleaner and more welcoming environment designed to better serve mothers, women and young children seeking care.

To further enhance the atmosphere, the club organized a Holiday Raffle to raise funds for additional improvements. Proceeds from the fundraiser were used to commission renowned artist Fernando Reyna of Reyna’s Art Gallery and Cafe to create a mural within the unit.

The mural was designed to bring warmth and comfort to the space while creating a calming and supportive setting for patients and their families. Club members said the artwork is intended to foster a sense of safety and positivity for women and children visiting the facility.

The project also introduced several practical upgrades aimed at improving patient comfort and education. New seating and cushioned benches were installed, along with a modern television dedicated to broadcasting healthcare information, including breastfeeding guidance and childhood vaccination schedules.

Additional improvements include updated signage, a children’s corner designed to keep young visitors engaged, and a water cooler to promote hydration.

The Rotary Club said the completed project reflects its continued commitment to strengthening community wellbeing and supporting local healthcare services.
