The Ministry of Health and Social Services will conduct the second round of its nationwide polio vaccination campaign from 24 to 27 February, targeting all children under 10 years.

The campaign follows the detection of poliovirus type 2 on 13 November 2025 through routine environmental surveillance of a sewage sample collected at Ndama at Rundu in the Kavango East region.

No polio cases have, however, been reported in Namibia.

The ministry says laboratory analysis has confirmed the virus is genetically linked to strains identified in neighbouring Angola.

The first round of the national response was carried out from 26 to 29 January.

Health officials say children must receive the oral polio vaccine in both rounds to ensure adequate protection, including those already vaccinated through routine immunisation.

The ministry says vaccination teams will operate at public health facilities, schools, outreach sites, community centres and through door-to-door visits in all regions during the four-day campaign.

Polio is transmitted mainly through the faecal-oral route, particularly in areas with inadequate sanitation and hygiene.
