Russian titanium producer VSMPO-AVISMA will supply welded titanium pipes for Egypt’s El Dabaa nuclear power plant, according to officials in Russia’s Sverdlovsk region, as construction progresses on what is set to become Africa’s first nuclear power station.
- Russia’s VSMPO-AVISMA will supply titanium pipes for Egypt’s El Dabaa nuclear power plant.
- The pipes will be used in seawater-cooling systems at the Mediterranean coastal facility.
- Rosatom expects the first reactor at the four-unit plant to begin generating electricity in 2028.
- The project highlights deepening energy and infrastructure ties between Egypt and Russia under the BRICS framework.
According to RUSSIA'S PIVOT TO ASIA, Sverdlovsk Region Governor Denis Pasler said the company had begun serial production of pipes for heat-exchange systems that will come into contact with seawater.
The pipes are intended for use in cooling systems at the El Dabaa facility, which is being built on Egypt’s Mediterranean coast by Russia’s state nuclear corporation Rosatom.
Pasler said titanium was selected because of its resistance to corrosion in aggressive environments, particularly in marine and energy applications where conventional materials degrade more quickly.
The El Dabaa project, located west of Alexandria, is expected to consist of four 1,200-megawatt reactors using Russian VVER-1200 technology. Rosatom has previously said electricity generation from the first reactor is expected to begin in 2028, with full completion targeted for 2030.
The development marks another major infrastructure partnership between Egypt and Russia, at a time when Cairo is seeking to expand electricity generation capacity and diversify its energy mix.
Egypt has increasingly positioned itself as a regional energy hub, investing heavily in gas production, renewable energy and nuclear infrastructure to meet rising domestic demand and support industrial growth.
VSMPO-AVISMA, one of the world’s largest titanium producers, manufactures titanium products used across the aerospace, marine, oil and gas, and chemical industries. Titanium is widely valued for its strength, low density and resistance to seawater corrosion.
The El Dabaa plant is also emerging as a strategic project within Egypt’s growing economic cooperation with BRICS members, following Cairo’s admission into the bloc in 2024.
