Community groups, schools, small businesses and non-profit organisations in Saint Lucia now have an opportunity to access funding to launch or expand projects aimed at reducing plastic pollution while creating practical environmental and economic solutions.
A new funding opportunity, the Sustainable Small Grants Programme (SSGP), has been launched under the ‘Closing the Caribbean Plastic Tap’ initiative to support community-driven efforts to tackle one of the Caribbean’s most persistent environmental problems: plastic waste.
Open to participants in Antigua and Barbuda, Grenada, Saint Lucia, St Kitts and Nevis, and St Vincent and the Grenadines, the programme is designed to empower micro, small and medium-sized enterprises, community-based organisations, NGOs, cooperatives, schools, associations and informal groups with demonstrated community engagement to implement practical, scalable interventions that reduce plastic leakage into the environment.
Organisations could receive funding to start or strengthen initiatives such as community recycling programmes, plastic collection drives, refill and reusable container systems, compostable packaging alternatives, upcycling businesses, school-based waste reduction projects, or small enterprises that transform plastic waste into usable products.
The programme is also intended to support projects that create jobs or income opportunities while addressing waste management challenges.
Each participating country is allocated up to EUR 80 000 (approximately EC$ 254 004), with individual grants ranging from EUR 30 000 (approximately EC$ 95 251) to EUR 80 000 (approximately EC$ 254 004).
Organisers say successful projects should show measurable environmental impact.
Applications are open until May 31, 2026, at 11:59 p.m. AST. More information on the call is available at: https://engage.iucn.org/topic/sustainable-small-grants-programme-closing-caribbean-plastic-tap
