It was an honor for more than 260 student musicians to perform at the University of Redlands.

So it’s fitting that they were part of San Bernardino County’s Basin Honor Band.

The students — from saxaphonists to drummers — entertained a crowd Saturday, Feb. 21, inside the university’s Memorial Chapel.

The youths, who earned their spots through auditions in front of professional musicians, had three rehearsals before taking the stage Saturday night, a news release from the San Bernardino County Superintendent of Schools office states.

The players included elementary, middle and high school students who hailed from 13 school districts across San Bernardino County, from the Alta Loma school district to the Yucaipa-Calimesa school system. They played in three ensembles, one for each level of school.

A similar show is planned for Saturday, Feb. 28, also at the University of Redlands.

That’s when the nearly 200-member San Bernardino County Honor Orchestra will grace the Memorial Chapel’s stage. Musicians from 14 school districts will play in the performance, set for 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.
