Smart Africa has reinforced efforts to advance Africa’s digital transformation agenda through a high-level regional workshop focused on strengthening data governance across Francophone Africa.
Held in Senegal, the workshop brought together African policymakers, government officials, and digital experts to improve institutional capacity around data governance strategies, digital public policy, and regulatory collaboration.
The initiative comes as African countries increasingly recognize data as a strategic asset for innovation, economic growth, digital transformation, and national sovereignty. Discussions focused on helping participating states build more harmonized, inclusive, and future-ready data governance frameworks aligned with continental digital priorities.
Organized jointly by Smart Africa, UNESCO, and Senegal’s Ministry of Communication, Telecommunications and Digital Affairs, the workshop was conducted under the SADA/WARDIP project framework.
Participants engaged in interactive sessions and practical exercises designed to deepen understanding of Africa’s evolving vision for data governance, while also exploring international and continental best practices. The program further aimed to strengthen policy-making capabilities and encourage collaborative approaches to implementing data-related reforms across borders.
Government representatives and experts from Burkina Faso, Côte d’Ivoire, Togo, Mali, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, and Senegal participated in the discussions.
The workshop aligns with broader continental priorities under the African Union Data Policy Framework and the Pan-African Data Governance Blueprint developed by Smart Africa, both of which aim to support trusted digital ecosystems and improve Africa’s ability to manage, protect, and leverage data for sustainable development.
As governments across Africa accelerate digital transformation initiatives, stronger regional cooperation on data governance is increasingly seen as essential for enabling cross-border innovation, digital trade, cybersecurity resilience, and inclusive economic growth.
