MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – A viral video showing Somali federal government soldiers apparently stepping on and desecrating the United States national flag has ignited widespread debate on social media, with analysts warning the incident could place fresh strain on already delicate relations between Mogadishu and Washington.
The footage, which has spread widely across multiple social media platforms, has drawn sharp criticism and raised questions over how the United States – which has invested billions of dollars over decades in supporting Somalia’s security forces and state-building efforts – could see its national flag treated in such a manner by members of the very military it has helped train and sustain.
Somalia’s Ministry of Defence said it had reviewed the video and described the conduct as unacceptable.
“The Ministry of Defence has taken note of a video circulating on social media showing individuals wearing Somali military uniforms engaging in unacceptable conduct involving the flag of the United States,” the ministry said in a statement.
“Such behaviour is inconsistent with the values, discipline and professionalism of the Somali National Army and does not reflect the views of the Ministry of Defence or the Federal Government of Somalia. The individuals concerned have been detained, and an investigation is underway to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident and determine appropriate disciplinary and legal action,” it added.
The ministry also reaffirmed Somalia’s commitment to its longstanding security partnership with the United States.
“Somalia greatly values its longstanding security partnership with the United States. Our cooperation has been instrumental in the fight against Al-Shabaab and ISIS and in strengthening Somalia’s security institutions. The Ministry of Defence reaffirms its respect for the people and flag of the United States and for the enduring partnership between our two nations,” the statement said.
The incident comes at a time when relations between Mogadishu and Washington have already faced a series of challenges, leading many analysts to argue that the episode could add another source of friction to an already sensitive partnership.
The concerns follow Washington’s recent decision to inform the African Union that it would end support for the United Nations logistical assistance to the AU peacekeeping mission in Somalia after December, raising fears over the future of the peacekeeping operation that has for decades served as a key bulwark against the militant group Al-Shabaab.
In January, Washington also announced it had suspended assistance to Somalia’s federal government, alleging that officials destroyed a United Nations World Food Programme warehouse and seized donor-funded food aid.
In June last year, the United States likewise suspended support for Somalia’s elite Danab Special Forces, which it had trained and equipped for more than a decade, after allegedly uncovering widespread corruption, including the theft of military rations and what it said was a failure by Somali leaders to take corrective action.
It remains unclear how Washington will respond to the latest incident involving Somali soldiers and the desecration of the American flag. The episode comes at a particularly sensitive moment for bilateral ties, as both countries continue to cooperate on counterterrorism operations against Al-Shabaab and ISIS while navigating broader security and assistance challenges.
