MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – Somalia’s federal government has deployed Turkish-trained forces to the coastal town of Barawe, the administrative capital of Southwest state, sharply escalating tensions and signaling a growing military buildup between the two sides.
A plane carrying dozens of elite police officers from the Turkish-trained Haram’ad unit landed in Barawe early Thursday, heightening fears of potential clashes between regional forces and federal troops in the area.
The deployment comes a day after Southwest state authorities announced the suspension of cooperation with the federal government. The regional leadership also declared that it recognizes only the provisional constitution adopted in 2012 as the country’s sole legitimate legal framework, rejecting a newly approved constitution passed by parliament.
Tensions deepened further when Speaker of Parliament Adan Mohamed Nur, a close ally of President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, attempted to travel by air to Baidoa on Thursday but was denied permission to land by regional authorities.
In response, Southwest state officials reinforced security in Baidoa, deploying anti-aircraft guns at the city’s airport and issuing a directive suspending all incoming and outgoing flights. Authorities described the measures as precautionary amid the escalating standoff.
In a statement, Speaker Adan Madobe said regional authorities had blocked his planned visit to Baidoa, a trip he said was intended to ease tensions and open a channel for dialogue to de-escalate the crisis.
