Sport-S rallied from two sets down to beat INJS, 3-2 (29-27, 25-18, 18-25, 19-25, 16-18), in the CAVB Men’s Club Championship at the BK Arena on Sunday.
Playing the first game of the day, the Ugandans and Ivorians went pound for pound in the opening set that was eventually won by INJS.
Malic Damulira’s charges fell behind, conceding four unanswered points that, even after they recovered, could not sustain the energy, and INJS claimed the set.
With their backs to the wall and on the verge of getting swept, Sport-S needed inspiration, and it came from the player with the most continental experience on the team, Jonathan Tumukunde.
The opposite, who has mainly played as a receiver-attacker, set the platform with early points in the set, and Sport-S remained in control throughout to win 25-18.
The same energy was carried into the rest of the game with Steven Mundua, Bosco Opira and the team’s number one attacking option, Duke Kyomukama, showing up thanks to good distribution from young setter Davis Suuna.
The victory left Sport-S in fourth place in Pool B and in a good position to qualify for the Round of 16 with their last group game to come against Cameroon Sportive on Monday.
