Spotify Boosts Visibility for Indie Venues On-Platform With New NIVA Partnership

Spotify and the National Independent Venue Association (NIVA) have struck a year-long partnership to help support independent live music venues across the U.S., it was announced on Wednesday (April 15).

The year-long program includes expanded visibility for independent venues on Spotify features, including venue pages and within the live events feed. This summer, a new playlist series titled The Independent Booker Spotlight will feature an independent booker selected by NIVA to create a playlist alongside Spotify’s editorial team. Spotify will also display the “Certified Live Independent” seal on venue pages.

“Independent venues are the heartbeat of live music,” Rene Volker, senior director of live music at Spotify, said in a statement. “They’re where artists take risks, build devoted communities, and where fans discover what they’ll love for the rest of their lives. This partnership with NIVA is about making sure Spotify’s platform, editorial, and product capabilities are working in direct service of that ecosystem. We’re here for the long game.”

Stephen Parker, executive director of NIVA, said in a statement, “Independent stages are where every artist gets their start and where nearly 200 million fans a year experience the joy of music, comedy, and performance. NIVA’s Certified Live Independent is a seal that shows the sacrifices and ingenuity that goes into keeping their venue or festival independent. We’re grateful that Spotify is elevating that seal and independent stages on their platform to allow millions of fans to experience the magic of these spaces.”

In 2020, Spotify partnered with NIVA to roll out its annual Wrapped campaign on the marquees of venues shuttered due to the pandemic. The streaming giant donated a total of $500,000 to the #SaveOurStages fund and the NIVA emergency relief fund.

In March 2025, Spotify launched its Concerts Near You personalized playlist, which updates weekly with 30 new tracks from artists performing near Spotify users based on their addresses. Last October, the streaming platform launched a feature allowing fans to follow their favorite concert venues on the app and updated its live events feed to refresh on a daily basis.
