Springbok Star Cheslin Kolbe Announces Emotional Return to South Africa

Cheslin Kolbe shared an emotional message announcing that he and his family will return to South Africa after his season in Japan comes to an end.

Tokyo, Japan (26 May 2026) – There is going to be a lot more excitement around South African rugby soon because Cheslin Kolbe is officially heading home.

The Springbok star recently announced on Instagram that he and his family will return to South Africa after his current season with Tokyo Suntory Sungoliath comes to an end, bringing to a close what has clearly been a deeply meaningful chapter in Japan. He returns to South Africa after a successful three-season stint with Tokyo Suntory Sungoliath, where he scored 21 tries and racked up 310 points in 42 appearances, further cementing his reputation as one of the game’s most exciting talents.

Kolbe shared an emotional message reflecting on the decision, explaining that Japan had become far more than just a place where he played rugby. Over the years, it became home for his family too, filled with friendships, memories and experiences they will always carry with them.

But after spending years abroad, the double Rugby World Cup winner said the time felt right to return home and begin a new chapter closer to loved ones.

While South African fans are already excited about the possibility of seeing Kolbe back on local rugby fields more regularly, the reaction from Japan showed just how much of an impact he made there beyond the game itself.

One emotional message from a parent stood out online, with the supporter sharing that Kolbe had inspired their son to fall in love with rugby and dream of one day becoming a winger and playing for Sungoliath too. The parent also praised Kolbe’s character, saying many people had been “captivated” by the kind of person he is off the field as well.

The tribute says a lot about the influence Kolbe has had wherever he has played.

The 32-year-old is now set to rejoin the Stormers, marking a return to familiar territory after last playing for the Cape side in 2017 before enjoying successful spells overseas. One can only imagine the excitement around the country at the thought of seeing Cheslin Kolbe back on local fields again.
