*Boston Celtics star Jaylen Brown took to his livestream over the weekend to escalate his ongoing war of words with ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith, delivering a profanity-laced response to the sports personality’s recent comments.
The back-and-forth started when Brown accused NBA referees of deliberately working against him, according to FOX News. The Philadelphia 76ers had trailed the Celtics three games to one before staging a stunning comeback to eliminate Boston from the playoffs. Smith responded by telling Brown to “be quiet,” a remark that did not sit well with the five-time All-Star.
Earlier this month on X, Brown said he would “be quiet” once Smith retired. On Sunday night, he made his position even clearer.

“Did he just say I needed to be quiet? Be quiet for who?” Brown said. “Man, f— Stephen A. Stephen A, Stephen B, Stephen C. My offer still stands. You want me to be quiet and stop streaming, well, I want you to be quiet and get off these networks because you’re not using your platform to do real journalism. You’re using your platform to use clickbait.”
Brown went further, calling on Smith to step away from sports media entirely and framing it as a broader cultural moment.
“Tell this mother—-er to retire because he’s the face of clickbait media at the point and maybe with his retirement we can spark a movement to get the rest of these mother—-ers out of here — or to also have some type of … forget journalistic integrity, actual integrity in order to hold themselves accountable to the bulls— takes they put out.”
Smith fired back on “First Take” Monday, delivering a direct warning to Brown while raising the stakes considerably. The media personality suggested he could begin reporting on sensitive topics surrounding Brown – including locker room dynamics, his relationship with Jayson Tatum, and his endorsement deals – if Brown continued the ongoing friction.
“Jaylen Brown, be careful what you wish for,” Smith said. “You really want me to start reporting on that level? Locker room, how the organization might think about you, how the city may feel about you, how Jayson Tatum may or may not have feel about you, sneaker deals, endorsement deals, the list goes on and on. The season is over, bro.”
Smith also questioned Brown’s motives, pointing to his $304 million contract and suggesting the Celtics star was using his name to generate attention. “But evidently, when you talking about clickbait and all of that stuff, somebody told you one of the best ways to get it is to bring up my name,” Smith said.
