Port Harcourt-born rising star Surrex has officially released his debut album “Letter From Doha” today, April 17, 2026, marking a defining moment in his evolution as one of the most compelling new storytellers in African music.
A deeply personal and sonically rich body of work, “Letter From Doha” captures Surrex at the intersection of his roots and global experiences. Inspired by a transformative journey to Doha, Qatar, the album reflects a broadened worldview while remaining firmly grounded in the realities of his upbringing in Port Harcourt. The result is a project that bridges cultures, emotions, and perspectives with striking authenticity.
At the heart of the album is Surrex’s distinctive Afro Gist sound, a style characterized by laid-back rap flows, sharp lyricism, and conversational storytelling. Across the project, he delivers intricate punchlines with an ease that mirrors candid late-night conversations, drawing listeners into narratives shaped by resilience, ambition, societal pressure, and personal growth.
Recorded across multiple locations, including Qatar, Lagos, and Port Harcourt, the album embodies a creative journey that is both nomadic and rooted. A major contributor to the project’s cohesive sound is producer Susshi, who worked on 12 of the album’s 14 tracks, playing a pivotal role in refining and defining Surrex’s sonic identity. Additional contributions come from Kokoz Beat on “Innocent Beauty” and Phrizsound on the album’s intro, “Isakaba.”
Surrex’s journey into music began with freestyling during his secondary school days in 2015, gradually building a loyal following throughout his university years. He made his official industry debut in 2021 with “Provide,” followed by subsequent releases including “One BTC” and his debut EP “The Wavegod EP.” His 2025 prequel project “LETTER FROM DOHA” laid the groundwork for this full-length release, setting the stage for a more expansive and introspective offering.
Drawing inspiration from global heavyweights such as Drake, Dave, BNXN, Blaqbonez, and Jack Harlow, Surrex continues to shape a sound that feels both globally informed and uniquely his own.
With “Letter From Doha,” Surrex not only introduces his debut album to the world but also solidifies his place as an artist to watch. Honest, reflective, and culturally resonant, the project stands as a bold statement of intent from a voice ready to make a lasting impact on the global music stage.
