TAEC commends Dar Port’s compliance with radiation safety regulations

DAR ES SALAAM: THE Tanzania Atomic Energy Commission (TAEC) board has conducted a working tour to Dar es Salaam Port to assess the implementation of safe use of radiation scanner technology employed in container inspections.

The visit was led by TAEC Board Chairman, Professor Joseph Msambichaka, who said he was satisfied with the level of compliance with radiation safety regulations and the efficiency of the scanners in improving cargo inspection operations at the port.

Prof. Msambichaka said TAEC is responsible for ensuring that radiation-based equipment used in various sectors across the country operates safely through licensing, regular inspections, and training of technology users.

“We have come to witness the work being carried out by TAEC in supervising the safe use of radiation in scanners used at the port. We are satisfied that the working environment is safe for employees, drivers, and the public at large,” he said.

He added that the use of radiation scanner technology has improved container inspection efficiency by reducing cargo clearance time, strengthening trade security, and contributing to the country’s economic growth.

Meanwhile, the Tanzania Ports Authority (TPA) Director of Security Services, Dr Jumanne Fhika, said the Port of Dar es Salaam currently operates 11 scanner machines, which have improved cargo inspection speed and contributed to increased government revenue.

“The use of this technology has reduced the time required for container inspections and enhanced efficiency in port service delivery,” Dr Fhika said.

Following the visit to the Port of Dar es Salaam, TAEC Board members proceeded to Mwalimu Julius Nyerere International Airport (JNIA), where they inspected the management and supervision of radiation equipment used to screen cargo entering and leaving the country.

TAEC said the initiative is part of ongoing efforts to ensure that radiation technologies are used in accordance with safety standards to protect the public, workers, and the environment from potential risks associated with unsafe radiation practices.
