DAR ES SALAAM: Tanzania is facing a climate finance gap of nearly US$12 billion, equivalent to more than 31tr/-, as the country requires a total of US$19.3 billion to meet its climate change response needs.
The scale of the shortfall was revealed by the Minister for Finance, Ambassador Khamis Mussa Omar, who said stronger collaboration among development partners and other stakeholders is essential to mobilise the resources required to address the growing impacts of climate change.
Speaking on October 5, 2026, at a Climate Finance Dialogue held at the Bank of Tanzania (BoT) headquarters in Dar es Salaam, Ambassador Omar said climate action cannot be separated from Tanzania’s broader development agenda.

He stressed that investments aimed at strengthening climate resilience should simultaneously generate wider benefits, including improved education, employment opportunities and sustainable livelihoods.
“The scale of the financial requirements is beyond what the government can meet alone, making cooperation with various stakeholders critical in bridging the gap and financing climate-related interventions,” he said.
Beyond the immediate financing challenge, Ambassador Omar warned that delaying action could ultimately prove more costly than investing early in measures to address climate-related impacts. He therefore urged stakeholders to view climate finance not as an isolated environmental concern, but as an investment in Tanzania’s wider development, resilience and long-term economic wellbeing.
