Teen escapes police mobile and takes the corporal’s handcuffs with him

By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): A 17-year-old wanted for theft escaped from a police vehicle in Bella Vista Village while still wearing an officer’s handcuffs, only to be recaptured at his own residence the next morning, without the handcuffs, which he could not account for. He has now been formally charged with theft and escaping from lawful custody.

According to the Belize Police Department, on Thursday, August 13, 2026, at about 5:35 p.m., officers on mobile patrol in Bella Vista spotted a male person known to be wanted by police for the crime of theft. Officers approached him, informed him of the report against him, cautioned him, and placed him under arrest.

What followed was proper juvenile procedure. Because the detainee is still a minor, officers escorted him to his mother’s residence so she could accompany her son to the police station, as the law requires a parent or guardian’s presence for a minor in custody.

The procedure created the opening. While at his mother’s residence, the teen jumped out of the police mobile and made good his escape, taking the corporal’s handcuffs with him. Efforts to recapture him at the time proved fruitless.

His freedom lasted one night. On Friday, August 14, at about 10:00 a.m., police recaptured the teen at his residence. Upon recapture, officers noted the handcuffs were no longer on his person, and when asked about them, he could give no account of the cuffs. He was informed he would be charged with theft and escaping from lawful custody, detained, and escorted to the Bella Vista Police Station.

At the station, the juvenile safeguards resumed: he was issued an acknowledgement form, which he signed, with his mother signing as witness.

On Saturday, August 15, police formally arrested and charged the 17-year-old labourer of Bella Vista with the crimes of theft and escaping from lawful custody. As he is a minor, his identity is being withheld, and as with any matter before the court, he is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.
