St Matthews Estate Tenants & Residents Association (SMETRA) is marking the 115th International Women’s Day today with the launch of a new monthly community gathering, Crochet Sundays.[/caption]
Marked on 8 March for over a century, International Women’s Day grew out of recognition of women’s role in the Russian Revolution and was later adopted by the United Nations. This year’s theme, “Give To Gain”, highlights how supporting others strengthens the whole community.
The Brixton event, playfully titled “Belles of the Ball (of Wool)”, offers a relaxed, creative space for neighbours to come together and celebrate the day. Alongside knitting and crochet sessions, there will be arts and crafts, nail art, hand and face painting, quizzes, games, food and drink, and giveaways.
Jean Ramsey, chairperson of SMETRA, told Brixton Buzz:
Today is about marking International Women’s Day in solidarity with women everywhere, while giving something back to our community and supporting one another in positive, creative ways.” – Jean Ramsey, SMETRA
Hot on the heels of their recent Hurricane Melissa event, SMETRA’s growing calendar of resident-led activities suggests a thriving community spirit on the estate, with Belles of the Ball (of Wool) providing the perfect opportunity to stitch celebration and connection together.
All are welcome.
