Uber encouraged by ‘numerous’ local sign-ups

Just over a week after opening registration to licensed taxi drivers in Saint Lucia, Uber says early interest in the platform has been positive.

In a follow-up to its December 16 announcement, the ride-hailing company told St. Lucia Times it has been encouraged by the response so far, with licensed taxi drivers and associations registering on the platform.

“Our goal is that all taxi drivers and taxi associations interested in driving with Uber can gain access to the app and the additional earnings opportunities that come with it,” the company said. “We are encouraged by the positive response we have already seen, with numerous sign-ups from both taxi drivers and associations in the past few days.”

As registration continues, Uber has sought to clarify how it works in situations common to the local taxi industry, particularly where the owner is not the operator.

“As for cases in which a taxi vehicle is owned by one person but driven by a licensed taxi driver hired by the owner, the person who must register on the app is the taxi driver who will be actively operating the vehicle, as long as they meet all requirements and submit the required documentation,” Uber said.

The company also addressed questions around shared vehicles, noting that its system allows more than one driver to be linked to a single taxi.

“More than one taxi driver profile can be associated with the same taxi registration number,” Uber said. “However, the system only allows one taxi driver to be logged in and active on the app at any given time.”

For vehicle owners working with multiple drivers, Uber said an additional option is available.

“Uber offers vehicle owners the option to register as a fleet, and have visibility over all taxi drivers operating under the same taxi registration number,” the company said.
