By Breaking Belize News Staff: The United Democratic Party is urging public officers to closely monitor discussions surrounding pension reform amid suggestions that the retirement age could eventually be increased and pension benefits adjusted.
During Wednesday’s press conference, UDP Chairman Senator Sheena Pitts said she had heard discussion of increasing the public service retirement age from 55 to 60 as part of efforts to control Government’s wage and pension bill. Pitts also warned of the possibility that future reforms could reduce the proportion of salary paid as a Government pension.
The comments were framed as a warning about proposals being considered rather than an announcement of an approved Government policy. No formal Cabinet decision implementing the specific changes outlined by Pitts was identified in current public reporting.
The issue nevertheless has a substantial policy history. Belize’s Government pension scheme generally has a normal retirement age of 55, creating a gap before Social Security retirement benefits become available from age 60. The Social Security Board’s latest actuarial review has recommended that Government increase its normal retirement age for new hires to 65, while earlier IMF analysis also examined raising the retirement age and reducing future pension replacement rates as possible long-term reforms.
Government’s 2026/27 budget also identifies pension sustainability and management of the public-sector wage bill as areas requiring reform.
