UEFA Super Cup 2026: History beckons for Artan, Onyango and Liban

Omar Artan and his African compatriots Liban Abdoulrazack Ahmed (Djibouti) and Stephen Eleazar Onyango Yiembe (Kenya) await history when they take charge of the UEFA Super Cup 2026 clash between PSG and Aston Villa on Wednesday.

The highly anticipated clash is an annual match played between the UEFA Champions League winner and the UEFA Europa League winner.

The trio will become the first non-Europeans to officiate the clash in history.

“This is a great honour for Omar Artan and for African referees,” said Dr Patrice Motsepe, CAF president. “It’s an excellent example of football bringing together and uniting people.”

Artan, added to the FIFA list of international match officials in 2018 also became the first Somali referee to officiate at the Africa Cup of Nations in 2024.

The Somalian made headlines when he was denied entry into the United States in June despite being part of the match officials for the World Cup and UEFA seized the opportunity to appoint him for this particular match.

To keep fit, Artan has been officiating in his native’s national league and was also in charge of the Kuwait Super Cup wand his last assignment before flying out was the CECAFA Kagame Cup in Kigali last week when he took charge of the final between Rayon Sport and Gor Mahia at Amahoro.
