Uganda Premier League champions Vipers SC suffered a disappointing start to their title defence after falling to a 1-0 defeat against Entebbe UPPC FC in the Entebbe Derby at St. Mary’s Stadium, Kitende, on Friday night.
The decisive moment came shortly after the half-hour mark when Vipers defender Kevin Dasylva misjudged a cross and inadvertently turned the ball into his own net.
The defeat ended Vipers’ long unbeaten run at home in the league, with the Venoms suffering their first home league defeat in two and a half years.
Their previous league defeat at Kitende came in March 2024, when rivals KCCA FC edged them 1-0. Similarly, their last home defeat in all competitions came in October 2025, when Zambia’s Power
Dynamos beat them 2-1 in the CAF Champions League qualifiers.
The champions will now have to quickly regroup as their attention shifts from domestic football to the continental stage.
Vipers will face Mauritanian side FC Nouadhibou in the first round of the CAF Champions League preliminary stage. Nouadhibou will travel to Kitende on Saturday, September 5, before Vipers make the return trip to Mauritania a week later.
Elsewhere, former champions KCCA FC suffered a 2-0 defeat to NEC FC, while URA FC were beaten 2-1 by Maroons FC. BUL FC edged Express FC 1-0, while SC Villa settled for a 1-1 draw against Kitara FC.
The UPL now enters Week Two, with more fixtures scheduled this week.
