Ugandan tactician Benon Mugisha has cemented his status as one of East Africa’s elite volleyball coaches after mastermindng a sensational finals series comeback to guide Rwanda Energy Group (REG) VC to the 2025/26 National Volleyball League championship.
REG VC were crowned champions on Sunday afternoon, May 17, after dismantling rivals Police VC in straight sets, 3-0 (25-22, 25-14, 25-23), in the decisive Game 5 of the playoff finals at a packed Petit Stade.
The title triumph completes an extraordinary weekend turnaround for Coach Mugisha’s side, who were staring at defeat just 24 hours prior.
On Saturday, Police VC were just one set away from clinching the national championship trophy, holding a commanding 2-0 lead in Game 4.
However, Mugisha’s tactical adjustments and the resilience he instilled in his squad sparked a monumental rally.
REG fought back from the brink of elimination to take the next three sets (20-25, 22-25, 25-23, 25-21, 15-7), forcing Sunday’s winner-take-all showdown.
Riding the wave of momentum from Saturday’s heroic escape, Mugisha’s men left nothing to chance in Game 5.
Unlike their slow starts earlier in the series, REG VC executed their game plan flawlessly on Sunday.
While the first set was a tooth-and-nail fight, REG claimed a 25-22 win thanks to sharper blocking and serving, two areas Mugisha had heavily drilled in recent weeks.
Police VC, visibly deflated from letting the title slip through their fingers the previous day, crumbled in the second set as REG dominated 25-14.
Police VC attempted a late surge in the third set, but Mugisha’s side remained composed, shutting down the threats of Police outside hitter Elphas Makuto.
Backed by the stellar play of Nicholas Matui, Madol, and Gisubizo, REG sealed the championship with a 25-23 victory in the final set.
For Mugisha, who returned to REG on a two-year contract after previously winning the 2019/20 title with the club, this championship reinforces his mid-season objective of restoring the energy side to their former glory.
It caps off a highly successful month for the Ugandan coach, who also guided REG to a bronze medal finish at the CAVB Men’s Club Championship in Kigali just weeks ago.
With a domestic league trophy secured in dramatic fashion, Mugisha’s reappointment has emphatically paid dividends, establishing REG VC once again as the kings of Rwandan volleyball.
