UK, Belize discuss sustainable finance and climate resilience at Green and Blue Finance Forum

By Zoila Palma:  British High Commissioner to Belize Alistair White and UK Climate, Environment and Energy Officer for Belize and the Caribbean, Zana Wade, participated in the Green and Blue Finance Forum 2026 held in Punta Gorda, where discussions focused on financing sustainable and resilient development in Belize.

The UK’s participation reflects its continued interest in supporting Belize as the country seeks to align its development priorities with the financing, partnerships and technical expertise needed to advance major projects.

The forum provided an opportunity to discuss Belize’s future energy needs, infrastructure development and investment pipeline, particularly as international development partners explore ways to better support small and climate-vulnerable states.

The event brought together representatives from several major development and financial institutions, including the World Bank, Inter-American Development Bank, CAF, Caribbean Development Bank, CARICOM Development Fund and the NAP Global Network/IISD.

Their participation created an opportunity to explore how international financing can be better aligned with Belize’s ambitions for resilient, inclusive and sustainable economic growth.

During their visit to southern Belize, White and Wade also met with representatives of the Julian Cho Society and the Toledo Alcalde Association. The discussions allowed the UK representatives to hear directly from Indigenous leaders about priorities, challenges and opportunities for collaboration in Toledo.

They also held talks with Minister Osmond Martinez, CEO Carlos Pol and Director Leroy Martinez on sustainable finance, economic transformation and opportunities to strengthen UK-Belize cooperation.
