Veteran actress and former beauty queen Cynthia Shange has died at the age of 76.

Her family says she died in the early hours of Monday in a hospital in KwaZulu-Natal after an illness.

Shange has a rich legacy in South Africa’s arts and entertainment industry.

Shange made history when she was crowned the first black Miss Africa South and represented the country at Miss World in London in 1972.

She became a household name through her roles in productions such as uDeliwe, Shaka Zulu, and Muvhango, captivating audiences with her performances.

Her contribution to the industry earned her lifetime achievement awards from both the SAFTAs and the Simon Mabhunu Sabela Awards.

She is survived by her children and grandchildren.
