Despite rain and strong winds on the final day, the cyclists say the emotional welcome in Qonce made every kilometre worth it.
Qonce, South Africa (14 May 2026) – After eight days, more than 1,000 kilometres on the road and miserable weather conditions on the final stretch, the Old Dalian Union (ODU) cycling team finally rolled into Qonce to a hero’s welcome.
The fundraising ride, which started in Cape Town and ended in Qonce earlier this month, formed part of the build-up to Dale College’s 151st reunion celebrations while also raising funds for future education, sport and community development projects in the town.

Led by ODU president Phiwe Ndinisa, the reality of what the team had achieved only truly sank in once they rode into town.
“I honestly had to hold back the tears. The weather was terrible, it was cold and pouring with rain, but there were still so many people waiting for us at the junior school.”
The cyclists were welcomed into Qonce by cheering residents, hooting cars and an escort from traffic services and the fire brigade, creating what Phiwe described as a moment the riders would “forever remember”.
While the ride started with nine cyclists leaving Cape Town together, the final stretch into Qonce turned into an even bigger community effort, with old boys, sponsors and school staff joining the group for the last leg.
“The team only really met properly the night before we left. But throughout the journey we just grew closer. Everyone helped each other, and I think we all realised very quickly that this was about something much bigger than ourselves.”
Their arrival also formed part of Dale College’s reunion weekend celebrations, adding to the atmosphere around the school and town.
“It created such a feel-good factor. The reunion was really well attended and the cyclists were celebrated throughout the weekend. Everything just came together beautifully.”
The ride also helped shine a spotlight on the ODU’s “5 Million by 2030” campaign, which aims to raise funds for a future multipurpose community facility in Qonce. The planned development will include recreational spaces and sporting facilities designed to benefit learners and the wider community.
Phiwe said the response from old boys has already been encouraging, with donations continuing to come in following the ride.
“It’s exciting because the support has shown us that people really believe in the vision. This was never just about cycling. It was about community and creating something meaningful for future generations.”
