DAR ES SALAAM: Quote: I see no evil, because love is blind – Ljupka Cvetanova Love – the word that can cause bliss, happiness and can make life worthwhile. It can make a man weak in the knees when he sees the woman he loves.
In marriage, love encompasses varied forms of romantic desires and it is a commitment to prioritise another’s well-being, simply put, it is a call for husband and wife to have each other’s needs and wants at heart. It is an emotional bond that requires sacrifice and selflessness.
Faith teachings have since time immemorial instructed a man to love his wife and in return a wife should respect her husband and be submissive to him. A submissive wife makes a husband proud of his masculinity and he feels responsible for her happiness. It is a beautiful thing.
A husband who is deeply in love may be blinded and may not see the obvious faults in his wife. He becomes emotionally attached and her happiness, pain and opinion matter intensely to him. Girl Child/Boy Child – Today, as the girl child grows into an independent woman and the boy child seems still unsettled in terms of the roles of a husband, the marriage landscape is yet to be properly defined.
On one hand, the independent woman might acquire knowledge and experience and be able to create her own workable submissiveness- be a respectful and obedient wife without losing herself – because she will be well informed in matters to do with love, and will know the buttons to press to influence her husband positively to do what she wants and what is right.
On the other hand, the boy child might be too laid back, too agreeable to everything the independent woman says, most likely blinded by love. Blind love is dangerous because it does not allow objective thinking, the man’s emotions are only driven towards making his wife happy regardless of the consequences of the action. Blind love was there a long time ago, it is there today, and it will be there tomorrow.
May the stories of King Ahab and his wife Jezebel and that of King Herod and his wife Herodia impart some wisdom to men and women in marriage and those who plan to get married in the future. King Ahab and Wife Jezebel – The Bible tells the story of Ahab, king of Samaria, and his strong-willed wife Jezebel.
Ahab appears to have been a generally mild and polite man. Although he was wealthy, he desired a piece of land near his palace that belonged to a man named Naboth. Ahab approached Naboth and offered to buy the land or exchange it for another, but Naboth refused, explaining that it was ancestral property that could not be sold.
Disappointed, Ahab returned home feeling sullen and upset. He lay on his bed, turned his face away, and even refused to eat. When Jezebel noticed his condition, she asked what was troubling him. After hearing the story, she devised a scheme to falsely accuse Naboth of cursing God and the king.
The plan succeeded, and Naboth was stoned to death. While all this was happening, Ahab remained passive. Only after Jezebel informed him that Naboth was dead did he rise and go to take possession of the vineyard, his mood suddenly lifted now that he had what he wanted.

However, God was displeased with their actions, and both Ahab and Jezebel were severely punished for their greed and injustice. This raises an important question: why did Ahab listen to his wife so readily?
King Herod and Wife Herodia – King Herod used his powers unfairly and snatched his brother’s wife from him and made her his own – because she was beautiful, smart and more. On his birthday, King Herod asked Herodia’s daughter to dance in front of the guests and was promised anything that she wanted as a present.
Herodia’s daughter danced very well and when asked to mention the present she wanted, she consulted her mother Herodia who advised her to ask for the head of John the Baptist – who was already in jail for criticising Herod the King for snatching his brother’s wife. So, Herodia wanted to teach John the Baptist a lesson. And she did it easily through her husband the King.
To you my reader – Of late, we hear of young men displaying narcissistic tendencies – arrogance, entitlement and manipulative behaviours. It could be a reaction to the independent woman – who does not depend on a man to be happy, because men feel good when they make their women happy.
In case of Ahab and Herod, their women knew exactly where a man’s weakness lies and they got what they wanted without too much effort or quarrels. However, to or our young women today – let’s find that proper way to be submissive and God will bless us.
