Who destroyed historic Complex D at El Pozito in Orange Walk?

By Zoila Palma:  Today, the National Institute of Culture and History (NICH), through the Institute of Archaeology (IA), issued a statement seeking the public’s assistance in identifying those responsible for the recent destruction of Complex D and its associated structures at the site of El Pozito, located near Guinea Grass Village, Orange Walk District.

The IA has a legal mandate to conduct proper research, protect, preserve, and sustainably manage Belize’s archaeological resources. Through its Research and Enforcement Unit (ECU), routine inspections of the northern districts are conducted, which led to the recent discovery of the destruction of Complex D and associated structures at El Pozito.

The IA says that it has been closely monitoring this area over the years, and monitoring recently intensified due to land clearing adjacent to the site core, which partially destroyed some structures.

Recent development also prompted the IA to partner with The College of East Texas to conduct research of the site under the leadership of Dr Keith Eppich as Principal Investigator.

The first season of this archaeological research project was conducted in the summer of 2026 to update the 1976 site map and plan for future research of El Pozito.

NICH added that the findings on August 17 of the destruction were “disheartening.”

“The findings reaffirm the need for the public’s support in protecting and preserving Belize’s archaeological resources. These sites form an integral part of our national cultural heritage, and it is only through joint effort, built on national pride, that we can ensure their protection,” NICH said.

In addition, IA reminded that under the National Institute of Culture and History Act Chapter 331 of the Laws of Belize, Revised 2020, Amended 2024, any person who wilfully damages, destroys, or disturbs an ancient monument or in any way marks or defaces an ancient monument commits an offence and, if found guilty, is liable to a fine not exceeding $75,000 or to imprisonment for a term not exceeding five years or to both such fine and term of imprisonment.

Anyone with information is urged to call 601-7292 or 672-4190.
