San Antonio Spurs superstar Victor Wembanyama is reportedly drawing a strict, unwavering line in the sand regarding his corporate partnerships, explicitly refusing to endorse soda or other sugary beverage brands. Why? Because he doesn’t want to play a role in harming the health of young kids.
In an industry where a massive beverage contract is practically a rite of passage for a top-tier athlete, Wembanyama’s stance is a departure from the status quo.
Look across NBA history, and the connection between superstars and soda giants is practically foundational. From Michael Jordan and Coca-Cola to LeBron James‘ iconic, decades-long run with Sprite and PepsiCo, sugary drinks have historically provided the biggest bags in athlete marketing.
For an athlete like Wembanyama, a signature soda deal would easily get him eight figures. Yet, the big man is reportedly completely uninterested. By keeping sugary drinks out of his commercial portfolio, he is intentionally prioritizing social responsibility and the well-being of his massive, youthful fanbase over an easy paycheck.
“We’re not gonna mix his image with sodas like Coca-Cola,” Jeremy Medjana, Wembanyama’s agent, told The New York Times. “They all want him, but Victor will never sell soda. Because he doesn’t want to kill the kids.”
For those who have followed Wembanyama since he entered the league, this health-first boundary shouldn’t come as a surprise. The center is famously obsessive about his own physical longevity, implementing strict regimens for flexibility, diet, and sleep that look more like high-level science than a standard workout routine.
To Wemby, endorsing a product loaded with high-fructose corn syrup, something completely antithetical to how he treats his own body, would be the ultimate form of inauthenticity. If he won’t put it in his body, he isn’t going to tell a kid to put it in theirs.
Instead, Wembanyama is focusing his commercial energy on brands that align with his forward-thinking, high-performance identity, such as his partnership with Nike.
