The Saint Lucia National Youth Council (SLNYC) has condemned the killing of youth leader Joy St Omer, describing her death as a devastating loss for her community and the country.

In a statement issued Thursday, the Council said it was still coming to terms with the circumstances surrounding her death, noting that the incident has left many deeply disturbed.

St Omer, who served as Treasurer of the Anse La Raye Youth and Sports Council, was remembered not just for her role within the council but for the impact she had on those around her.

“Joy was more than a youth leader. She was a mother, daughter, friend and woman with potential and a commitment to service within her community,” the Council said.

The organisation extended condolences to her family, friends and colleagues, as well as to the young people who would have been directly influenced by her work.

But beyond mourning her loss, the Council said the killing points to a deeper issue that cannot be ignored.

“This tragedy forces us to confront a painful and urgent reality. Violence against women and girls continues to rob families of lives filled with promise,” the statement read.

The Council is now calling for stronger action, including better protection for vulnerable individuals, more focus on mental health support and conflict resolution, and a greater willingness from communities to speak out against abuse.

“We urge young people to seek help, speak up and support one another. Silence can no longer be an option when lives are at stake,” it said.

The SLNYC also urged institutions and community leaders to work together to create safer spaces and ensure that laws meant to protect individuals are enforced.

As the country continues to grapple with the loss, the Council said it hopes St Omer’s life and work will not be forgotten, and that her death will serve as a turning point in how violence, particularly against women, is addressed.
