Zuma’s MK Party wields the axe again in latest parliamentary shake-up

Johannesburg – The uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party has appointed five new parliamentary whips and removed several existing office-bearers in another shake-up of its parliamentary leadership.

According to The Citizen, the appointments of Emerald Kwenzokuhle Madlala, Sanele Gregory Mwali, Pinky Pearlgene Mngadi, Sihle Ngubane and Wesley Douglas took effect on 12 October.

Visvin Reddy, David Skosana, Zelna Saira Abader and Siyabonga Gama were removed from their positions as whips. Ngubane’s appointment marks his return to the role after previously serving as chief whip before his removal in August 2024.

The changes come under the leadership of chief whip Philasande Mkhize, who was appointed in June 2026 and is the latest in a succession of officials to occupy the position.

In a related report, IOL reported that the party had also restructured its parliamentary operations, placing responsibility for deployments, constituency work and parliamentary coordination under the Office of the Chief Whip.

The revised structure is intended to “strengthen co-ordination, clarify responsibilities and improve the management of parliamentary and party-related work”, according to the memorandum cited by IOL.

The latest changes follow repeated leadership adjustments since the party entered Parliament after the 2024 elections. In January 2026, eNCA reported that Jacob Zuma had removed Colleen Makhubele as chief whip and appointed Brian Molefe as treasurer-general.

The continued reshuffling highlights the party’s efforts to reorganise its parliamentary leadership and internal structures as it maintains its position as the official opposition.
