If you thought A Different World was just bringing back the nostalgia at Hillman, think again. The Netflix revival is serving up legacy, family secrets, and one emotional callback to The Cosby Show that has fans looking at Deborah’s (second) love interest, Ellington, with a wave of nostalgia.
Ellington, played by Vincent Jamal Hooper, enters the series as a student and teaching assistant who gets close to the reboot’s lead, Deborah Wayne. But underneath the romance drama is a major Huxtable connection.
The Theo Connection
In one of the season’s most meaningful moments, Ellington talks about struggling in school before discovering that he had dyslexia. His uncle recognized what was happening and helped him get diagnosed.
That storyline mirrors Theo Huxtable — played by the late Malcolm Jamal Warner — whose own learning disability was explored during The Cosby Show. Theo struggled academically in college before his family realized that dyslexia was affecting him. According to PEOPLE, the revival’s nod to Theo has felt especially poignant following Warner’s death at 54 in 2025.
And that was only the beginning.
Ellington Is A Huxtable
Later in the season, Ellington reveals that his last name is Kendall, connecting him directly to his mom, Denise Huxtable, the character originally played by Lisa Bonet and the reason A Different World existed in the first place.
According to TV Insider, the show also reveals that his grandmother Clair Huxtable (Phylicia Rashad) was involved in Hillman’s history, organizing sit-ins and pushing the school toward a more Afrocentric curriculum. PEOPLE notes that the storyline echoes an episode of The Cosby Show where Clair Huxtable discussed similar Hillman activism.
So yes, Ellington is Denise’s son. The new series just casually dropped a whole family tree into the finale.
Vincent Jamal Hooper Was Just As Shook
Vincent Jamal Hooper found out about the reveal almost like the rest of us did.
Speaking with TV Insider, Hooper said writer Des Moran told him shortly before filming began that he had a secret about his character, and he was shocked to learn what it was.
“We had a Super Bowl party like the day before we started shooting, and I was talking to Felicia [Pride], our showrunner, and Des [Moran], one of our writers, and Des was like, ‘Hey, I have a secret! Like a reveal for your character later in the season.’ And I was like, ‘What is it? Should I know?’ So he consulted Felicia, who was like, ‘Yeah, tell him.’
And he was like, ‘Yeah, you’re a Huxtable.’ I was like, ‘Sorry. What?’ That’s crazy,” shared Hooper.
Hooper also told the outlet that for season two, he hopes his character’s mother shows up. If Denise does return, Hillman might have another generation of Huxtable history waiting in the wings.
For now, Ellington has already given A Different World a fresh connection to its past while honoring Malcolm-Jamal Warner’s Theo in a way longtime fans can appreciate.
