Former Charles Akonnor has ruled himself out of the race to become the next head coach of the Ghana national football team, firmly shifting focus to his current role with Gor Mahia ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Akonnor, who previously managed the Black Stars, addressed growing speculation linking him with a return to the national team setup following uncertainty surrounding current head coach Otto Addo. While acknowledging that such links are not unwelcome, the experienced tactician made it clear that he is not considering a comeback at this time.

“I was once the coach of the national team. If there’s a link, it’s not anything negative. It’s not anything bad. It’s good,” Akonnor said. “I’m a Ghanaian. I love my country. I love the national team. I will support them in the World Cup. And that will be it.”

The former Asante Kotoko boss emphasized his satisfaction with life in Kenya, where he is currently leading Gor Mahia. “For now, my focus is on Gor Mahia. I am with Gor Mahia. I’m very happy. I’m doing well,” he added, effectively ending speculation about his immediate involvement with the Black Stars.

Akonnor’s stance comes at a time when discussions around the future of the national team’s technical direction continue to intensify, with the Ghana Football Association expected to make key decisions as preparations for the 2026 World Cup gather momentum.
