Belize mourns the passing of longtime children’s healthcare advocate Milagro Garel

By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): Milagro Garel, the woman behind two decades of children’s medical missions in Belize, has died.

Her family confirmed her passing in a statement, saying she went peacefully with her loved ones at her side.

“It is with broken hearts that we share that our beloved Milagro passed away peacefully this afternoon, surrounded by love.”

Garel collapsed on July 28 with a ruptured cerebral aneurysm. Doctors stabilised her here before an air ambulance took her to Guatemala, where surgeons operated and she remained in intensive care for weeks. Her husband Joe kept the country updated as she regained consciousness in stages.

Belizeans raised the money that made the treatment possible, covering transport, surgery and hospitalisation costs running between $95,000 and $140,000.

As country director for World Pediatrics, Garel spent more than twenty years getting Belizean children onto operating tables they would never otherwise have reached, working alongside Friends of Pediatrics and other groups.

“Your beautiful smile, your incredible spirit and the light you brought into so many lives will remain with us forever,” her family wrote.
