Blacknews.UK REPORTS ON AN HONORARY DOCTORATE FOR MARCUS! MARCUS RASHFORD is set to receive an honorary doctorate for his charitable work and achievements as a footballer later today. It was announced in July 2020 that 23-year-old Rashford would receive the award from the University of Manchester. He follows in the footsteps of other Manchester United powerhouses including Sir Alex Ferguson and Sir Bobby Charlton who accepted the highest honour the university can bestow. President and Vice-Chancellor, Professor Dame Nancy Rothwell, said: “Marcus is an extraordinary young man with an extraordinary talent and drive that stretches well beyond the football field. “His work for charity and his high-profile campaign will not only help countless young people across our own city, but across the entire country. “Our university has social responsibility at its core and this sense of civic pride and duty is something we are proud to share with Marcus. That is why the University is delighted to make Marcus our youngest ever recipient of an honorary degree.” Later today Marcus Rashford will become the youngest ever recipient of an honorary degree from The University of Manchester. I am Chancellor at University of Manchester. This is a highlight of my seven year tenure . The Manchester United striker was praised for spearheading a social media campaign that enabled thousands of disadvantaged school pupils to receive free school meals after prompting the government to U-turn on their policy during the COVID-19 lockdown. The free food voucher scheme went on to benefit children throughout England through the summer holidays also. Rashford teamed up with poverty and food waste charity, FareShare, this year to further extend his charitable work to those hit hardest by the pandemic. In a statement announcing the award, Rashford previously spoke of his pride at being named an honourary doctatorte. “It’s a proud day for myself and my family. When you look at the great names that have been awarded this doctorate in the past, it’s humbling,” he said. “We still have a long way to go in the fight to combat child poverty in this country but receiving recognition from your city means we are heading in the right direction and that means a lot. “Thank you to The University of Manchester.”
