CBeebies Jo Jo and Gran Gran nominated for 2021 Rockie Award at the Banff World Media Festival. After beginning as a successful book launch from author Laura Henry, the CBeebies show was adapted to the small screen and follows a black British family throughout their day-to-day lives. The programme has been hailed for its diversity and representation as it is the first ever British animated series that focuses on a black family. BBC Children’s In House Productions and A Productions have all contributed to telling the story of Gran Gran, who comes from Saint Lucia, and her four-year-old granddaughter Jo Jo and their Caribbean heritage. Speaking on the success of the show, Katherine McQueen, Managing Director of A Productions and Ros Attille, told online animation magazine Skywigly: “For me, it was very much about in Caribbean culture, grandparents are so so important and the fact that on CBeebies it’s all about children and so much of children’s lives are about their parents and about their family and their extended family. Grandparents are so important to that culture. It was just really nice to take that element and celebrate it.”
