A routine border enforcement exercise in central Zambia turned into a major human smuggling interception after seven Somali nationals found hidden under rice bags in Zambia were uncovered inside a commercial transit vehicle. The interception took place in the town of Kapiri Mposhi, located in Central Province, when officers from the Zambia Revenue Authority conducted a search on a Toyota Probox traveling along a major transport corridor toward the Chirundu One-Stop Border Post, a crucial transit hub connecting Zambia with neighboring Zimbabwe. Official statements confirmed that revenue officers grew suspicious during the routine inspection and proceeded to search the rear cargo compartment of the vehicle, where they discovered the seven men concealed beneath heavy sacks of rice and other commercial goods in an apparent attempt to bypass immigration checkpoints.
According to Oliver Nzala, the Manager of Corporate Communications for the Zambia Revenue Authority, the Zambian driver of the vehicle and all seven Somali migrants were immediately taken into custody at the scene. Law enforcement officials transferred the individuals to Zambia’s Department of Immigration for formal profiling and investigation under the provisions of the national Immigration and Deportation Act. Authority officials noted that the cramped conditions inside the cargo area posed significant physical dangers to the occupants, who were allegedly being transported along an established clandestine route extending from the Horn of Africa through East and Southern Africa, with South Africa serving as the ultimate intended destination.
