Broadway Subway Project reaches major milestone with final track installation

THE Broadway Subway trackwork will be completed this week, marking a critical milestone for the project and continued progress toward the opening of the extension in 2027, the Province announced on Monday.

“The Broadway Subway Project is creating faster, more reliable transit to better connect people with services, work and school, and will help reduce congestion along one of the busiest corridors in the region,” said Mike Farnworth, B.C. Minister of Transportation and Transit. “With trackwork set to be completed this week, we are making significant progress toward opening this critical transit infrastructure for people living in the Lower Mainland.”

The Broadway Subway Project will extend the Millennium Line west from VCC-Clark Station to Arbutus Street, providing fast, reliable transit service through one of the region’s busiest corridors. The extension will improve access to jobs, education, housing and services, while reducing congestion and supporting sustainable growth throughout the region.

Traffic-deck removal and corridor restoration activities are taking place at stations in Broadway as construction advances on the project.

In August 2026, project crews completed removal of the traffic deck at Broadway-City Hall Station. Work is progressing on installing utilities, backfilling the space above the station and restoring the street and sidewalks.

“The Broadway Subway extension will shape Vancouver for generations to come, strengthening Broadway as a major economic, health-care and transit corridor that connects the city from east to west,” said Gregor Robertson, federal Minister of Housing and Infrastructure. “Reaching this milestone is an important part of delivering the transit Vancouver needs to grow sustainably and remain a connected and livable city.”

To facilitate the timely completion of work, two blocks of West Broadway between Alberta and Cambie streets have been temporarily closed to vehicles since July 2026. A detour via 8th Avenue is in place for transit and vehicles, with transit priority measures to minimize delays to buses. Pedestrian access to all businesses, services and residences remains open throughout the work. Broadway is expected to fully reopen to vehicles in January 2027.

At Mount Pleasant Station, all driving lanes and new, widened sidewalks are open to the public on East Broadway between Main and Quebec streets, helping to promote pedestrian traffic in the area.

The Broadway Subway will improve transit reliability, reduce congestion and support a growing region. Once open, the commute from VCC-Clark to Arbutus Station will take 11 minutes, saving the average transit commuter almost 30 minutes a day and relieving congestion along Broadway.

“Seeing the Broadway Subway extension take shape along this vital corridor is an exciting moment for Vancouver and the region. Getting here has taken sustained work and partnership across governments, transit agencies, workers and communities,” said Taleeb Noormohamed, federal parliamentary secretary to the minister of artificial intelligence and digital innovation and MP for Vancouver Granville. “Once complete, this project will deliver fast, reliable transit to connect people to jobs, education and services.”

The project is scheduled to open for passenger service in fall 2027.

* The Broadway Subway Project is a 5.7-kilometre extension of the Millennium Line from VCC-Clark Station to Broadway and Arbutus.

* The nearly $3-billion project includes 700 metres of elevated guideway, five kilometres of tunnels and six new underground stations.

* On opening day, it will have the capacity to move three times as many people as the current 99 B-Line.
