Taking to X the morning after the festival, the rapper expressed his excitement over the crowd’s reception and thanked South African hip-hop for its role in his journey. “Yo, BACK TO THE CITY was FIRE!!!! That crowd showed me live FR!!! THANK YOU SA HIP HOP!!! I owe my whole career to you!!! The start and the core!!! I owe you more music and more energy and I promise to deliver more fire!!!” he wrote.

The milestone edition took place at Mary Fitzgerald Square in Newtown, Johannesburg, bringing together artists and hip-hop enthusiasts to celebrate two decades of South African hip-hop culture. The 2026 festival, held under the theme “Against All Odds,” also coincided with the 50th anniversary of the 1976 Youth Uprising and Johannesburg’s 140th birthday.

The event featured a full programme celebrating the culture through live performances, rap battles, graffiti, fashion and street culture. Its lineup brought together international names such as Ab-Soul, Slum Village and Blu & Exile, alongside South African acts including Emtee, Blxckie, Stogie T, Reason, Tuks, Touchline and Kane Keid.

The overwhelming crowd response served as a reminder of the culture and loyal supporters who have played a significant role in shaping Cassper Nyovest’s career. From his early days in hip-hop to becoming one of South Africa’s most recognisable rap stars, the rapper has remained closely connected to the local scene that helped propel him to success.

Cassper’s message added a personal note to the festival’s historic milestone, with his gratitude extending beyond his own performance to the wider culture that Back to the City has championed for 20 years.

As the festival marks two decades of celebrating hip-hop, Cassper’s reaction reinforces the connection between artists and the community that sustains the genre. For the rapper, the message is clear: he has not forgotten his roots, and he intends to keep delivering music for the culture that helped build his name.
