Caught on camera: Worker walks off with $699 in power tools

By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): A construction site theft in the Orange Walk District unravelled in minutes, after the man in charge reviewed his worksite cameras and reported watching a worker pocket a missing power tool while the rest of the crew was at lunch.

According to the Belize Police Department, the 27-year-old construction worker, who oversees a site in the Shipyard area, reported that on Friday, July 17, 2026, at about 12:20 p.m., a supervisor approached him to say that a Dewalt impact driver was missing from the site.

He told police the report surprised him, as he oversees a small crew of just four workers. The supervisor explained that the crew had left for lunch, leaving all tools and equipment out since they were returning to continue working, only to discover the Dewalt impact missing on their return.

The site manager then reviewed the cameras installed at his worksite. According to his report, the footage showed that one worker remained behind after the crew left for lunch at about noon. The man, he stated, walked into an unfinished zinc building where the Dewalt impact was visible, looking back constantly in a suspicious manner, before picking up the tool, placing it in his bag, and heading home.

The worker did not return that day, the complainant noted, because he had been given the afternoon off, having mentioned earlier in the week that he needed to collect a payment owed by a previous employer.

The stolen items comprise a yellow and black Dewalt impact driver valued at $395, a 4-amp battery valued at $295, and a bit and socket valued at $9, a total of $699. The complainant downloaded the video footage and handed the matter to police, requesting court action.

Police have listed a person as wanted in connection with the theft. As he has not been detained or charged, his identity is being withheld pending charges.

The matter remains under investigation.
